Issue Four
From My Grimoire
There's something incredibly comforting about lighting a candle.
Whether it's a scented candle on a rainy evening, a tea light beside a warm bath, or a small flame flickering beside your journal after a long day, candles have a way of helping us slow down and be present.
Long before I began exploring witchcraft fully, I was already using candles in this way without even realising it. I'd light one when I needed comfort, focus, or a moment of peace. Looking back, I can see that I was already creating small rituals for myself.
That's one of the reasons I love candle magic so much.
It's simple. It's accessible.
And perhaps most importantly, it reminds us that magic doesn't have to be complicated.
You don't need a room full of supplies, an elaborate altar, or years of experience to begin working with candle magic. Sometimes all you need is a candle, a clear intention, and a few quiet moments carved out of a busy day.
For centuries, people have used flame as a symbol of hope, transformation, prayer, protection, and manifestation. Across cultures and spiritual traditions, the act of lighting a candle has carried deep meaning.
In modern witchcraft, candle magic remains one of the most popular and beginner-friendly practices because it allows us to focus our energy, set intentions, and create sacred moments in our everyday lives.
So whether you're completely new to witchcraft or simply curious about working with candle energy, I hope this week's Sunday Spellbook helps you discover just how powerful a single flame can be.
Pop the kettle on, get cosy, and let's explore the magic of candles together.
With love,
Natasha
What is Candle Magic?
At its heart, candle magic is the practice of using a candle as a focus for your intention, energy, and desired outcome.
While there are many different ways to practice candle magic, the basic idea is beautifully simple: you decide on an intention, light a candle, and focus your energy on that goal as the flame burns.
Some practitioners view candle magic as a way of directing spiritual energy towards a specific purpose. Others see it as a form of mindfulness or manifestation, helping them focus on what they truly want to bring into their lives.
Many witches fall somewhere in between.
Regardless of your personal beliefs, candle magic offers a powerful opportunity to slow down, become intentional, and create a meaningful ritual from an ordinary moment.
Why Candles?
As I mentioned, fire has long been associated with transformation.
When we light a candle, we're witnessing change in action. The wax melts, the flame dances, and over time the candle is transformed. In many magical traditions, this process symbolises the movement of energy and intention from the physical world into the spiritual or unseen realms.
A candle also gives us something tangible to focus on.
Rather than allowing our minds to wander, we can direct our attention towards the flame and the intention we've chosen to work with.
Candle Magic Is One of the Most Accessible Forms of Witchcraft
One of the reasons candle magic is so popular among beginners is because it requires very little to get started.
You don't need a collection of rare herbs. You don't need expensive crystals. You don't need a dedicated altar.
In fact, many candle rituals can be performed using nothing more than a simple tea light and a clear intention.
The tools can be wonderful additions to a practice, but they are not what creates the magic.
You are.
Common Intention for Candle Magic
People use candle magic for all sorts of purposes, including:
- Self-love and confidence
- Protection and grounding
- Prosperity and abundance
- Healing and emotional balance
- Creativity and inspiration
- Releasing habits or situations that no longer serve them
- Spiritual growth and personal development
The intention itself is often far more important than the candle you choose.
A Practice Rooted in Intention
Perhaps the biggest misconception about candle magic is that it requires elaborate rituals or complicated spells. In reality, some of the most meaningful candle magic is often the simplest.
Lighting a candle while setting an intention for the day.
Taking a few moments to reflect before bed.
Creating a peaceful space for meditation or journaling.
These small acts of intention can become powerful rituals in their own right.
Because ultimately, candle magic isn't about the candle.
It's about the meaning you give it.
✦ Spellbook Note
One of my favourite things about candle magic is that it meets you where you are. Some days you may have time for a full ritual. Other days, simply lighting a candle while you drink your morning tea can be enough. Both are equally valid.
A Brief History of Candle Magic
The use of candles in spiritual and magical practices stretches back far longer than modern witchcraft.
For thousands of years, people have been drawn to the symbolism of flame. Fire has provided warmth, protection, light, and comfort throughout human history, making it one of the most powerful and universal spiritual symbols across cultures.
Long before candles became common household items, ancient civilisations used oil lamps, sacred fires, and torches in religious ceremonies and rituals. The ancient Egyptians burned lamps in honour of their gods, while the Greeks and Romans often used flame as part of offerings, prayers, and acts of devotion.
As candle-making techniques developed, candles became increasingly important within both religious and folk traditions. Throughout medieval Europe, candles were lit in churches, homes, and shrines as symbols of faith, remembrance, protection, and hope. A burning candle often represented a prayer being carried upwards or a connection between the physical and spiritual worlds.
Alongside these formal religious uses, candles also found their place in folk magic and household traditions.
Ordinary people would light candles while making wishes, offering prayers, seeking protection for their homes, or making important life events. Certain colours, herbs, and symbols gradually became associated with specific intentions, laying the foundations for many of the candle correspondences still used by modern practitioners today.
By the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, candle magic had become firmly woven into many forms of modern witchcraft, ceremonial magic, and spiritual practice. As interest in paganism and contemporary witchcraft grew, so too did the popularity of using candles for manifestation, intention-setting, meditation, and ritual work.
Today, candle magic remains one of the most widely practiced forms of witchcraft, not because it is complicated, but because it is simple, adaptable, and deeply personal.
The tools may have changed over time, but the heart of the practice remains the same:
A flame.
An intention.
And a moment of focused connection.
✦ Spellbook Note
One of the reasons candle magic has endured for so many centuries is because it doesn't belong to a single tradition. Across different cultures, religions, and spiritual paths, people have always found meaning in lighting a flame and focusing their hopes, prayers, and intentions upon it. There's something beautifully human about that.
Why Candle Magic Works
One of the most common questions beginners ask is:
"Does candle magic actually work?"
The answer often depends on who you ask.
Some practitioners believe candle magic works by directing spiritual energy towards a specific intention. Others view it as a form of manifestation, helping them align their thoughts, actions, and focus with a desired outcome. Some simply see it as a meaningful mindfulness practice.
Regardless of where you sit on that spectrum, candle magic has remained popular for centuries because it encourages something many of us struggle with in our everyday lives:
Intentional Focus.
The Power of Intention
Think about how often we move through life on autopilot.
We rush from one task to another, juggling responsibilities, distractions, and endless to-do lists. Rarely do we pause and ask ourselves:
What am I truly focusing my energy on right now?
Candle magic creates a deliberate moment to do exactly that.
When you light a candle with a clear purpose, you're setting aside time to focus on a specific goal, feeling, or desire. Whether that's self-love, confidence, healing, abundance, or simply finding peace, you're giving your intention space to breathe.
The Symbolism of the Flame
Fire has always been associated with transformation.
A candle begins as solid wax, yet through the flame it gradually changes form. Many witches view this as a powerful symbol of personal growth, manifestation, and energetic movement.
As the candle burns, it becomes a visual reminder of your intention.
Each flicker of the flame encourages you to remain focused on what you're hoping to create, release, heal, or attract.
Ritual Creates Meaning
One reason candle magic feels so powerful is because rituals help us mark moments as important.
Consider the role candles already play in our lives.
- Birthday candles
- Memorial candles
- Holiday candles
- Religious ceremonies
Even outside of witchcraft, we instinctively use candles to signify meaning.
Candle magic simply builds upon this long-standing relationship between flame and intention.
When we light a candle during a ritual, we're telling ourselves:
This moment matters.
Visualisation and Focus
Many candle rituals involve visualisation.
As you gaze at the flame, you may imagine:
- A goal coming to fruition.
- Peace entering your home.
- Confidence growing within you.
- A challenge gradually fading away.
Visualisation can help strengthen your connection to your intention by engaging both your imagination and emotions.
The more vividly you connect with your goal, the more meaningful the ritual often becomes.
The Magic is in the Practice
Sometimes people worry that they're not "doing enough."
Perhaps they don't have expensive supplies. Perhaps they don't know elaborate spells. Perhaps they're worried they're not "witchy enough."
The truth is that candle magic doesn't need to be complicated to be meaningful.
A simple tea light, a clear intention, and a few moments of focused attention can be just as powerful as an elaborate ritual.
Because ultimately, candle magic isn't about having the perfect candle.
It's about creating a meaningful moment of connection with yourself.
A Blend of Action and Intention
It's important to remember that candle magic isn't a substitute for action.
Lighting a green candle for abundance won't magically make money appear in your bank account.
Lighting a yellow candle for confidence won't instantly remove all your fears.
However, these rituals can help shift your mindset, strengthen your focus, and remind you of the actions you wish to take.
Many practitioners find that candle magic works best when paired with real-world effort. The candle supports the journey. You still walk the path.
The candle supports the journey.
You still walk the path.
✦ Spellbook Note
Whether you view candle magic as spiritual, psychological, symbolic, or a blend of all three, its greatest strength lies in its ability to help you slow down and act with intention. In a world that constantly demands our attention, there's something wonderfully magic about choosing where to place your focus.
Choosing Your Candle
One of the biggest misconceptions about candle magic is that you need a cupboard full of beautiful coloured candles before you can begin. The truth is much simpler.
While different candle colours are traditionally associated with different intentions (which we'll explore in the next section), the most important part of any candle ritual isn't the candle itself, it's the intention you bring to it.
If all you have at home is a small white tea light, that's more than enough to begin.
Does the Size of the Candle Matter?
Not at all.
Some rituals use larger pillar candles that burn over several days, while others use tiny birthday candles that last only a few minutes.
Neither is more "magical" than the other.
Choose a candle that suits your intention, your available time, and your space.
For example:
- Tea lights are perfect for short daily rituals, meditation, journaling, or setting a simple intention.
- Spell candles (chime candles) are ideal for focused rituals that you intend to complete in a single sitting.
-
Pillar candles are often used for longer workings or intentions that are revisited over several days.
Remember, bigger doesn't mean better.
Scented or Unscented?
Either works beautifully.
Some practitioners enjoy scented candles because fragrance can help strengthen the atmosphere of a ritual.
For example:
- Lavender for calm.
- Citrus for energy and positivity.
- Rose for love and self-compassion.
Others prefer unscented candles so they can focus entirely on the flame without distraction.
There isn't a right or wrong choice.
Use whatever helps you feel most connected to your practice.
What About Wax?
If you're buying candles specifically for magical work, you may come across discussions about different types of wax.
The most common are:
- Beeswax - Traditionally valued for its natural qualities and warm, steady burn.
- Soy Wax - A popular plant-based option that burns cleanly and is widely available.
- Paraffin Wax - Commonly found in many everyday candles and perfectly suitable for beginners.
While some witches have personal preferences, they type of wax is far less important than the intention behind your ritual.
Don't let expensive supplies become a barrier to beginning your practice.
White: The Most Versatile Candle
If you're only going to own one candle colour, make it white.
White candles have long been considered universal within many magical traditions and can often be used in place of any other colour. They're commonly associated with:
- Protection
- Purification
- Healing
- Peace
- Spiritual Connection
Because of their versatility, many experienced witches keep white candles on hand for all sorts of rituals.
Start With What You Have
It's easy to look at beautiful altar photographs online and feel like your practice isn't enough. Please don't let that stop you.
Some of my favourite rituals have been performed with a simple tea light, a mug of tea, and ten quiet minutes before the rest of the house woke up.
Witchcraft isn't measured by the size of your candle collection.
It's measured by the intention you bring to each moment.
✦ Spellbook Note
If you're just beginning, I'd recommend buying a pack of simple white tea lights before anything else. They're inexpensive, incredibly versatile, and a wonderful reminder that meaningful magic doesn't have to come with a big price tag.
Understanding Candle Colours
If you've ever looked at a witch's altar, you may have noticed candles in every colour imaginable. This isn't simply for decoration.
In many magical traditions, different colours are believed to carry different symbolic energies and correspondences. Choosing a particular candle colour can help reinforce the intention behind your ritual, giving your mind something visual to connect with as you work.
It's important to remember, however, that these meanings aren't universal.
Different traditions, cultures, and practitioners may associate colours with significantly different intentions, and that's perfectly okay. Witchcraft is a deeply personal practice, and you'll likely discover your own preferences as you gain experience.
Rather than worrying about finding the "perfect" colour, think of candle colours as gentle guides.
They help support your intention, they don't create it.
A Quick Guide to Candle Colours
White
Protection, purification, healing, peace, spiritual connection. Often considered the universal substitute for any colour.
Red
Passion, courage, vitality, strength, confidence, motivation and romantic love.
Green
Abundance, prosperity, growth, luck, career goals, finances and new opportunities.
Yellow
Creativity, communication, learning, confidence, optimism and success.
Blue
Healing, emotional balance, calm, truth, wisdom and peaceful communication.
Purple
Intuition, psychic work, spirituality, meditation, inner wisdom, and personal transformation.
Black
Protection, grounding, banishing negativity, releasing unwanted energy and setting healthy boundaries.
Pink
Self-love, friendship, compassion, emotional healing, kindness and gentle relationships.
Can You Use More Than One Candle?
Absolutely.
Some practitioners like to combine colours to represent multiple intentions. For example:
- A pink candle alongside a white candle for self-love and emotional healing.
- A green candle with a yellow candle when working towards career success and confidence.
- A blue candle paired with a purple candle for meditation and strengthening intuition.
There are no strict rules. Choose combinations that feel meaningful to you.
What If You Don't Have the Right Colour?
Please don't let this stop your from practicing.
This is one of the biggest worries I hear from beginners, and my answer is always the same:
Use what you have.
If all you own if a white tea light, use the white tea light. Your intention will always be more powerful than owning every candle colour under the sun.
May experienced witches still reach for white candles because of their versatility. Sometimes the simplest tools become the ones we use most often.
✦ Spellbook Note
It's easy to get caught up in buying the "right" colour for every spell, but some of the most meaningful rituals I've ever done have been with a simple white candle. Don't let perfection become a barrier to practising. Start where you are, with what you have, and let your practice grow naturally from there.
Preparing Your Candle
One of the questions I hear most often from beginners is, "Do I have to prepare my candle before I use it?" The simple answer is no. You can absolutely light a candle, spend a quiet moment setting your intention, and begin your ritual. However, many witches enjoy taking a little extra time to prepare their candle beforehand, not because it's required, but because it helps them slow down and become fully present.
I've always thought of preparing a candle in much the same way as making your favourite cup of tea. Could you simply boil the kettle, throw a teabag into a mug and carry on with your day? Of course. But sometimes the little rituals surrounding it - the favourite mug, waiting for the kettle to boil, wrapping your hands around the warmth - become just as comforting as the tea itself. Candle magic is very similar. Preparing your candle isn't really about changing the candle; it's about gently shifting your own mindset before you begin.
Cleansing Your Candle
Many practitioners like to cleanse a candle before using it for the first time. This doesn't mean the candle has negative energy attached to it, nor is it a requirement for successful magic. Instead, cleansing is a symbolic way of setting the candle aside for a sacred purpose and marking the beginning of its role within your practice.
There are countless ways to do this, and none are more "correct" than another. Some people pass their candle through the smoke of incense or cleansing herbs, while others leave it beneath the moon overnight. You might simply hold it in your hands, take a few slow breaths, and imagine a lingering energy gently drifting away. Even wiping away dust while quietly thinking, "This candle is now ready for my practice," can become a meaningful ritual in itself. As with so much in witchcraft, your intention matters far more than the method you choose.
Charging Your Candle
Once your candle feels ready, you may wish to charge it with your intention. Charging simply means taking a few quiet moments to focus your thoughts on what you hope this ritual will support. Rather than worrying about finding the perfect words, think about the feeling you want to invite into your life. Perhaps you're looking for more confidence before a big change, a sense of calm after a stressful week, or simply a peaceful evening where you can reconnect with yourself.
Hold the candle gently between your hands and allow yourself to become still for a moment. Some people repeat a simple affirmation, while others prefer silent reflection. Neither approach is better than the other. What matters is that you're creating a moment of mindfulness before lighting the flame, allowing your intention to become the heart of the ritual.
Personalising Your Candle
One tradition you'll often see is carving words or symbols into the wax before lighting the candle. This isn't something you have to do, but it can be a lovely way to make the ritual more personal. You might choose to carve a single word such as peace, healing, confidence or abundance, or perhaps a moon, star, protective sigil, or even your initials. The carving doesn't need to be beautiful, it's the meaning behind it that matters.
Many witches also enjoy lightly anointing their candle with oils. Lavender is often chosen for peace and relaxation, rose for self-love and compassion, cedarwood for grounding, and sweet orange for joy and creativity. If you decide to do this, only use a tiny amount of oil and ensure it won't create a fire hazard. Some traditions recommend applying the oil from the centre upwards when attracting something into your life, or from the centre downwards when focusing on release, but these are traditions rather than strict rules.
You may also notice beautifully decorated spell candles on social media, covered in herbs, flowers and glittering crystals. While they certainly look magical, it's worth remembering that these images often prioritise aesthetics over practicality. If you do choose to decorate your candle, use herbs sparingly, keep them away from the wick wherever possible, and never leave a burning candle unattended. Personally, I often prefer placing herbs and crystals around the candle instead of directly on it. It create a beautiful ritual space while keeping everything much safer.
The Most Important Ingredient
If there's one think I'd love you to take away from this section, it's that candle preparation is entirely optional. Some evenings you'll have the time and energy to cleanse your candle, carve symbols, arrange herbs and create a beautiful altar. On other days, you'll light a simple white tea light between cooking dinner and folding the washing. Both are equally valid expressions of your practice.
Witchcraft shouldn't become another source of pressure or another impossible standard to live up to. Your rituals are there to support your life, not complicate it. The candle doesn't need to be perfect, and neither do you. If your intention is genuine, you've already done the most important part.
✦ Spellbook Note
One of the biggest misconceptions I had when I first started was thinking every candle needed to look like something from Pinterest before it "counted". These days, some of my favourite rituals happen with nothing more than a plain white tea light after the girls have gone to bed. The magic has never been in how elaborate the candle looked, it's always been in taking a few quiet moments to reconnect with myself.
Your First Candle Magic Ritual
If you've made it this far, you already know everything you need to perform your first candle ritual.
One of the biggest misconceptions about witchcraft is that every spell needs dozens of ingredients, complicated incantations, or hours of preparation. The truth is, some of the most meaningful rituals are also the simplest (yes, you will get fed up of me saying this, but it's something I want everyone stepping into their practice to know). Candle magic isn't about creating an elaborate performance, it's about creating a quiet moment where your intention has room to breathe.
For this ritual, all you'll need is:
- A candle (any colour that feels right, or simply a white candle)
- A lighter or matches
- A quiet space where you won't be disturbed for a few minutes
- An intention you'd like to focus on
You don't need expensive tools or a perfectly styled altar. Your kitchen table, bedside cabinet, or even your vanity table (like I do) can become sacred simply because you've chosen to practice there.
Step One: Create a Moment of Stillness
Before lighting your candle, spend a minute simply becoming present.
Take a few slow, deep breaths.
Notice the room around you.
Allow your shoulders to relax.
If your mind is busy, that's completely normal. Rather than trying to stop your thoughts, simply acknowledge them and gently bring your attention back to your breathing.
Magic begins with presence.
Step Two: Set Your Intention
Hold your candle in both hands for a moment.
Ask yourself:
What do I need today?
Perhaps you're looking for confidence before an interview, peace after a stressful week, motivation to begin something new, or simply a reminder to be kinder to yourself.
Try to keep your intention positive and focused on what you wish to invite into your life, rather than what you're trying to avoid.
For example:
"I welcome calm into my home."
"I trust myself to make good decisions."
"May I continue growing into the person I'm becoming."
Your intention doesn't have to sound poetic. It only needs to be honest.
Step Three: Light the Flame
As you light your candle, imagine your intention travelling into the flame.
Spend a few minutes simply watching it burn.
Notice the warmth, the gentle movement of the light, and the peaceful rhythm of the flame. If your thoughts begin to wander, quietly return your focus to your intention.
There is no need to force anything to happen.
Sometimes the most magical part of candle magic is allowing yourself permission to simply sit in silence for a few moments.
Step Four: Close Your Ritual
When you feel ready, take on final deep breath and spend a moment feeling grateful for the time you've given yourself.
If your candle is small and safe to do so, you might allow it to burn all the way down. If you're using a larger candle, there's absolutely nothing wrong with extinguishing it and returning to it another day.
Some practitioners prefer to snuff out a candle rather than blow it out, believing this preserves the intention. Others are perfectly happy to gently blow out the flame.
Neither approach is more "correct."
Choose the method that feels most meaningful to you.
Before leaving your ritual space, take a moment to notice how you feel.
You may feel calmer. You may feel hopeful.
Or you simply feel as though you've paused for the first time all day.
That, in itself, is magical.
✦ Spellbook Note
When I first started practising, I thought every ritual had to feel dramatic to be effective (something along the lines of Hocus Pocus or Practical Magic). Now, some of my favourite moments are the quietest ones - a candle glowing while the house is finally asleep, a warm mug beside me, and five uninterrupted minutes to simply breathe. Don't underestimate the magic in those oridinary moments. They're often the ones that stay with us the longest.
Common Beginner Mistakes (and Why They're Completely Normal)
If there's one thing I'd love you to take away from this guide, is that there's no such thing as a perfect witch.
Every practitioner, no matter how experienced they are, has forgotten an ingredient, questioned whether they were "doing it right," or wondered if a ritual had worked at all. Those little moments of uncertainty don't mean you've failed, they simply mean you're learning. Witchcraft isn't something you master overnight. Like any meaningful practice, it grows with time, curiosity, and experience.
One of the biggest worries I hear from beginners is that they don't own the "right" candle. It's easy to look online and feel as though every intention requires a specific colour, a particular herb, and an elaborate altar setup. In reality, many experienced witches reach for a simple white candle more often than any other. White is wonderfully versatile and has long been associated with protection, healing, purification, and spiritual connection. If it's the only candle you have at home, then it's more than enough to begin your practice.
Another concern people often have is that their mind keeps wandering during a ritual. Perhaps you're thinking about work, wondering what to cook for dinner, or suddenly remembering that you forgot to put the washing on. That's completely normal. Our minds naturally drift, especially when we're trying to slow down after a busy day. Rather than becoming frustrated with yourself, simply acknowledge the thought and gently return your attention to your candle and your intention. Every time you do, you're strengthening your ability to be present.
Social media has also created the impression that every candle flame carries a hidden message. You may have seen videos claiming that a tall flame means your spell is powerful, or that a flickering wick means someone is thinking about you. While some traditions do explore candle divination, it's important not to overanalyse every moment of the flame. Sometimes a candle flickers because a window is open. Sometimes the wick is slightly uneven. Sometimes it's simply behaving exactly as candles do. The purpose of candle magic isn't to spend the entire ritual trying to interpret the flame, it's to create a quiet moment where you can focus on your own thoughts, intentions, and personal growth.
It's also incredibly common to worry that you've forgotten part of the ritual. Maybe you realised halfway through that you hadn't cleansed your candle. Perhaps you forgot to say your affirmation out loud or didn't have time to carve a symbol into the wax. Life has a habit of interrupting us, especially if you have children, pets, or a busy household. None of those things make your practice any less meaningful. Witchcraft has always adapted to the lives of the people who practiced it, and your rituals are allowed to look different from anyone else's.
Finally, many beginners worry because they didn't feel anything extraordinary after their first spell. They expect a rush of energy, a powerful spiritual experience, or a sudden certainty that their intention has already begun to manifest. Sometimes those moments do happen, but more often candle magic works in much quieter ways. You may simply notice that you feel calmer, more hopeful, or more connected to yourself than you did ten minutes earlier. Those gentle shifts are just as valuable, even if they don't feel dramatic at the time.
As you continue exploring candle magic, you'll naturally develop rituals that feel authentic to you. You may discover that you enjoy carving symbols into every candle, or you'll find that lighting a simple tea light while you write in your journal is all you ever need. Neither approach is more "real" than the other. The most meaningful practice is the one that supports your life, brings you peace, and allows you to return to yourself again and again.
✦ Spellbook Note
If I could go back and tell my beginner self one thing, it would be this: stop worrying about getting everything "right." Some of my favourite rituals have happened after long, exhausting days with nothing more than a white tea light glowing on the table while the house was finally quiet. Those moments never looked magical enough for social media, but they are exactly where I found the most peace.
Sunday Spellbook Reflection
Before you close this week's chapter, I'd love to leave you with a few moments to yourself.
Witchcraft isn't only about gathering knowledge, it's about noticing how that knowledge begin to weave itself into your everyday life. Sometimes the biggest shifts don't happen during a ritual at all, but afterwards, when you pause to reflect on what you've learnt and how it resonates with you.
You don't need a beautiful leather Book of Shadows or a perfectly curated journal for this exercise. A notebook from your desk drawer, the notes app on your phone, or even a quiet moment with a cup of tea is more than enough.
If any of these questions speak to you, spend a little time exploring them.
Journal Prompts
- What intention feels most important to me in this season of my life, and which candle colour best represents it?
- When was the last time I intentionally slowed down, and how did it make me feel?
- Which part of candle magic feels most exciting to explore, and is there anything that still feels intimidating?
- What small ritual could I realistically incorporate into my weekly routine without adding pressure to my life?
- How can I bring more moments of peace, mindfulness, or gratitude into my everyday home?
This Week's Tiny Ritual
This week, light a single candle for yourself.
It doesn't need to be dressed with herbs or carved with symbols, and you don't need to ask the universe for anything in particular. Simply light the flame, make yourself a warm drink, and sit with it for five quiet minutes.
Watch the flame dance. Take a few slow breaths. Allow yourself to simply be.
Sometimes the most powerful magic isn't found in doing more, it's found in giving yourself permission to pause.
Weekly Affirmation
"I create magic through my intention, not perfection."
If you'd like, write this somewhere you'll see it throughout the week, tuck it into your journal, or simply repeat it each time you light a candle. Let it become a gentle reminder that your practice doesn't need to look like anyone else's to be meaningful.
✦ Spellbook Note
I used to think every ritual had to feel profound or life-changing, but I've come to realise that the rituals I remember most are often the quietest ones. A candle glowing while the girls are asleep, a warm mug in my hands, and five uninterrupted minutes of stillness have become some of my favourite moments of the week. My hope is that you find those little pockets of magic too.
Final Reflection
If there's one thing I hope you take away from this week's Sunday Spellbook, it's that candle magic isn't about buying the most beautiful supplies, memorising complicated correspondences, or creating rituals that look worthy of Pinterest.
It's about creating a small moment that belongs entirely to you.
In a world that constantly asks us to rush, to be productive, and to tick the next thing off our to-do list, lighting a candle can become a quiet act of rebellion. For a few precious minutes, you're choosing to slow down. You're choosing to check in with yourself. You're choosing to remember that you matter too.
Some weeks your ritual might involve a beautifully prepared altar, carefully chosen crystals, handwritten intentions and an hour of uninterrupted peace. Other weeks, it might simply be a white tea light glowing on the kitchen counter while dinner cooks in the oven. Both are equally magical, because the power has never been in how your practice looks, it has always been in the intention behind it.
One of the biggest lessons witchcraft has taught me is that magic isn't something we only experience during rituals. It's found in the little moments we often overlook: stirring herbs into a homemade meal with love, opening curtains to the morning sunlight, pausing to admire the moon on a quiet evening, or taking five minutes before bed to breathe beside the gentle glow of a candle.
Those small moments have become some of the most meaningful parts of my own practice.
So wherever you are on your journey, whether this was your very first introduction to candle magic or you've been practicing for years, I hope this guide has reminded you that your path doesn't need to look like anyone else's.
It doesn't need to be perfect.
It doesn't need to be expensive.
It only needs to feel like yours.
Thank you so much for spending part of your Sunday with me. It genuinely means the world to know that you're here, learning alongside me, one page at a time.
Until next Sunday...
Keep following your curiosity.
Keep trusting your intuition.
And don't forget to leave a little room for magic in the everyday.
With love,
Witching Hour ✨
